About the City of Greensboro
Greensboro was incorporated as a town on December 24, 1823. Greensboro is the county seat of Hale County and is located in west-central Alabama in the Blackbelt region. At the 2020 census, the population was 2,218 down from 2,497 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Hale County, Alabama. Schools in Greensboro are part of the Hale County Public School System. Greensboro has two elementary schools, one middle school, and three high schools.
Greensboro Historic District
The Greensboro Historic District, which encompasses the entire downtown area, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features nearly 150 nineteenth-century structures, including the Greensboro Opera House and the Noel-Ramsey History (ca. 1819), constructed by French settlers from the Vine and Olive Colony in nearby Demopolis. Magnolia Grove (1840) is the birthplace of Richmond Person Hobson, who later gained fame for his exploits in the Spanish-American War. Visitors to Greensboro can learn more about civil rights and slavery at the Safe House Black History Museum, which houses a collection of media and artifacts.
Downtown Main Street
One of Greensboro’s most popular places to visit is its downtown area, which just so happens to be part of the Greensboro Historic District. Greensboro’s downtown area is home to a variety of businesses, including specialty shops and restaurants.
Location
Greensboro is slightly southeast of the center of Hale County and is crossed by Alabama State Routes 14, 25, and 69. SR 14 leads northwest 21 miles (34 km) to Eutaw and east 19 miles (31 km) to Marion. SR 25 leads northeast through Talladega National Forest 36 miles (58 km) to Brent and south 32 miles (51 km) to Thomaston. SR 69 leads north 38 miles (61 km) to Tuscaloosa and southwest 33 miles (53 km) to Linden. Demopolis is 25 miles (40 km) to the southwest via SR 69 and U.S. Route 80. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Greensboro has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km 2 ), of which 0.01 square miles (0.02 km 2 ), or 0.40%, are water.
